Established in 1950 to provide sacred burial grounds for African Americans of Northern Kentucky and their families, today Mary E. Smith is a unique place of prayer and devotion to the souls of the dearly departed, we invite you to visit.

Mary E. Smith Cemetery provides a dignified and peaceful final resting place while honoring the lives, families, and history of our community. We are committed to helping families navigate burial and memorial arrangements with compassion, respect, and care. Our services include assistance with burial arrangements, gravesite selection, memorial and interment coordination, cemetery records, and support for families seeking information about loved ones laid to rest on our grounds. As a historic cemetery, we are equally committed to preserving the stories, legacy, and cultural significance of those who came before us for generations to come.

A Shared Story of History and Compassion

The Mary E. Smith Memorial Cemetery was founded in 1950 and was dedicated to Mary E. Smith (1866-1950), the mother of co-founder Rev. Edward Smith. This cemetery is the final resting place of many notable persons including Civil Rights activist William H. “Che” Payne (1943-1970).
